Canada Northern Pike Fishing
Canada Fly-in Northern Pike Fishing Bait and Spinning- During spawn, after ice out throughout
June the Canada Northern Pike are very active and territorial. They
search out the warm shallow bays and holes that are not affected by
the current and cold lake water. There is usually a shallow reef or
a point that stops the cold lake current from entering and affecting the
spawn. There also might be a feeder stream that
is bringing in warmer water. During this time you will catch
many more Canada trophy pike due to the concentration of pike competing for
these areas. Catch ratios are climbing and topping out at the 20 to 30
lb range and larger. Last year we caught a 50 inch Northern. The Northern
Pike can be caught on spoons, spinners, top water
plugs, jerk baits and streamer flies, all shallow water sight
fishing. This is the most popular time so book early
for some fantastic Canada Northern Pike fishing! - After the first week of July and into August the large females disperse from their spawning holes and spread out around the main lake. They move into a variety of depths and structure. They can still be caught in the shallows depending on the water temperature and along structure off the deeper water. Northern Pike still like to feed in the shallows but will usually have deep water close by. Pike don’t get huge by wasting a lot of calories traveling long distances to feed. If they hang off deep structure they can ambush bait or go into the warmer shallow waters to feed with a minimum of effort. Casting with diving plugs and trolling the drop offs and around the many islands seems to produce the best catch during the hot summer days. Remember unlike the more southern lakes our shallow bays can reach 80 degrees due to the long daylight hours. Way too hot for any large fish. - Now that the nights are getting longer and the weather cooler the large fish will start returning to shallower water. Some of our largest fish are taken in ten to fifteen feet of water in September. Always in tall weeds and cover. They are much heavier after feasting all summer. We are producing more trophies every year as we learn more about these monsters habits.
Canada Fly In Fly Fishing for Northern Pike- Fly fishing for large spawning female pike during June after ice out has become a popular sport among fly fishers. Nothing like seeing 4 feet of Northern attack your presentation in 3 feet or less of crystal clear water. Sometimes seeing these monsters and enticing them to attack your presentation are two different matters. During these times when all they do is follow your fly to the boat you will find that a smaller presentation is all they are looking for. So tie up a few short 1 ½ " minnow imitations to go with your large streamers and bunnies and come on up and try your luck. Black top and white bottom and white with red head fly pattern seem to trigger the most aggressive strikes. During July and August you will need to go deeper with weighted line to find the larger pike after they disperse throughout the lake after spawn. Late August and September will find the same big females in 10 to 15 feet of water in coves and weeded area at about 55 degree Fahrenheit. You will also see tall weed growth in these areas. Again you will see the strike at this time. June is best for trophy catch numbers but late August and September are catching up as we learn more about these ladies. You will find that these fall Northerns are much heavier after their summer's feasts. - We have spent many hours along with our fishers studying the habits of these large predators and will do our best to put you onto your trophy. We are fisherman serving fisherman.
