Catch and ReleaseBarbless Hooks "The use of barbless hooks for sport fishing is mandatory in the NWT. Barbless hooks permit easier removal of the hook, minimizing damage to the fish and reducing handling time, which subsequently increases the chances of survival for released fish. Many fish that are released after being caught with a barbed hook later die from excessive handling or bleeding. Barbless hooks can be purchased at local sporting goods stores. Barbed hooks can easily be converted to barbless by either crimping or filing the barb off.. ." (excerpt from NWT Sport Fishing Regulations)
The less your catch is handled, the more its chances of survival are increased after the release. To achieve that Hearne Lake Lodge provides (1 in each boat) a "cradle" instead of a net for easier handling of your trophy fish. Hearne Lake Lodge strongly believes in the practice of Catch and Release to ensure a healthy fishery for generations to come. We do however sacrifice a few for shore lunch or evening meals (if you want). Always use the smaller of the species. This is a good time to get Don to give you a lesson on how to debone a pike should you wish to learn how.
